Thanks for Reading Days
Thanks for Reading Days will be held the week before Thanksgiving at all of our Early Head Start Centers in Leon, Jefferson and Madison counties (beginning Monday, November 14 through Thursday, November 17). Volunteers are encouraged to sign up to read during one of the 30 minute intervals scheduled. We'll provide the children's books that our toddlers like to have read to them. Last year, Board Members, business leaders, elected officials, media personalities and other volunteers visited our Early Head Start classrooms and read books to a classroom of Early Head Start students. (Note: our classrooms have a maximum of 8 children, up to and including the age of 3 years). The "Cat in the Hat" made an appearance at our Parkway center and the talents of Casanova Nurse, Chief Meteorologist at WTXL, Amanda Curcio, Education Reporter at the Tallahassee Democrat, and Julie Montanaro, Anchor at WCTV, were evident as they read to classes at Brandon's Place. Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz read to children in our Madison and Jefferson County centers. We are grateful to all the volunteers who took time from their busy schedules to read to the children.
Research has shown that reading aloud to children from birth is the single most important activity to be done to help prepare them for reading and learning. Community leaders visiting our classrooms and reading to children helps us focus attention on the importance of reading to children. We ask parents of children enrolled in our Early Head Start centers to read to their child 15-to-20 minutes each and every day. This will be the third year Kids Incorporated has held Thanks for Reading Days. It has become an event our children and staff enjoy and look forward to each year!
If you are interested in reading to the children in one of our classrooms as part of Thanks for Reading Days, please contact Judie Miller at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 850-414-9800, ext. 104. If you would like to volunteer in a classroom at one of our Early Head Start centers throughout the year, whether to read to children or to be an extra pair of hands in their daily activities, please contact Matt Vossler at email@example.com or visit our volunteer page at http://www.kidsincorporated.org/volunteer.
Holiday Happiness is a project Kids Incorporated has carried out for many years. It is designed to provide holiday gifts for Kids Incorporated's client families whose children would not otherwise receive holiday gifts.
Businesses, organization and individuals shop for family members, utilizing a wish list developed by the family with the assistance of a Kids Incorporated Family Advocate. Unwrapped gifts are dropped off at a central location for the family members and someone from that family picks the items up and they wrap and give them out to their family members in accordance with their individual holiday tradition. It's a terrific way for those who want to brighten the holidays for a needy family to do so and it means a great deal to the family members!
